Eric Stocker – From Shadow to Light
La Résidence de France is pleased to present From Shadow to Light, a solo exhibition of French Master of Lacquer Eric Stocker.
Eric Stocker, Artisan restorer for the French National Museums and the Mobilier National (National Movable Heritage), is an expert in lacquer, gilding and polychrome. He has been mastering these techniques since 1974.
In 1998 he was invited by the European Union to join an art and crafts program in Cambodia that eventually became later Artisans Angkor. Eric Stocker has since trained hundreds of Cambodian youths forming their careers in lacquer, gilding and polychrome.
In 2008, he was joined by his brother Thierry Stocker, who had been practicing the same art in France since 1978. They have become the fourth generation of brothers working together in their family.
To help create a level of excellence in the unique pieces they make, they founded Angkor Artwork, a workshop with young Cambodian women artisans based in Siem Reap.
The Stocker brothers employ fifteen Cambodian craftsmen. Ten of them are deaf and have received an education from the organization Krousar Thmey. They tutor them in developing their technical and artistic skills within excellent working conditions.
Using only natural and vegetal materials, Angkor Artwork achieves the highest quality in its final products; the lacquer comes from trees bled by master craftsmen, many of the trees having been planted with the help of the Stockers themselves. Silver and 23-carat gold leaf are applied for gilding. Oxidation is perfectly mastered to highlight a harmony of vegetable imprints permanently engraved in natural lacquer, gold, copper and silver leaf. Naturally cured straw is flattened and patterned to create radiantly decorative items raised From Shadow to Light.
